Bumbling around Boston

I’ve been way too lazy posting this – it’s been a whole week and a half…

We met up with my mother in law last weekend for a couple of days in Boston towards the end of April. I’d been there a couple of years ago on a similarly-short trip, I think sometime in the summer. I was mostly on my own that time, so a great deal more shopping was done this time.

We had a good diner-style breakfast at Charlie’s Sandwich Shoppe, a bit south of our hotel. Since we went on a Friday it wasn’t very crowded, but we did still have to wait a few minutes for a table. I’d imagine it’s crazy on the weekend. On Saturday we had breakfast at a place where we could see Fenway Park from our table. We’d considered going to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Gardner, but we ended up just doing a lot of walking, enjoying the very nice weather.

After breakfast and museum rejection we went strolling along the Charles River with everyone else in Boston. We made a detour to get some iced tea and catch the T to get close to Copp’s Hill Burying Ground.

On the way there we walked by the very cool but crazily-named Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge.

Copp’s Hill Burying Ground was overrun with a big group of Boy Scouts when we were there, but they were remarkably well behaved – maybe dehydrated from all the walking and sun. After communing with the dead we needed a drink, so we found a deli/gelato/bar place in Little Italy and recharged a little before walking on to Faneuil Hall. A great deal of shopping was done, but eventually lunch and beer were obtained at Kingfish Hall, where I enjoyed a nice whole fish that compensates a little for Mr. English’s Flash abomination web site.

Before heading off to catch our flights we walked to brunch at Masa, where I treated my cold/allergies/Man-Bear-Pig-flu with a tequila mary. I’m told the huevos rancheros were pretty good too. On the way back to the hotel we walked by the Boston Duck Tour waiting area. I don’t think they’re as obnoxious as they are in Seattle, but the guides do dress up in funny outfits. I like how each bus/boat is a different color and name.
